Hello, my name is Victoria, and I am a recovering stay at home mother. I've been in the Mommy business since 1976 and the arrival of our oldest son, Andrew. We added Matthew in 1978 and Emily in 1980. In 1989 our world sort of imploded when our youngest son arrived much too early. He made his appearance wieghing less than 1 1/2 pounds. Within days he had his first surgery and I took up residence in the NICU. I added the title "Mother of Special Needs Child" to my resume.
I would have happily given up this title in a moment and, at times, I might have been equally tempted to give up the child as well. However, no one offers you that choice. It has been a challenge. I butted heads... and egos... with schools, doctors and relatives. I've gained amazing friends and lost some others. The entire family has physical and emotional scars, but we have survived.
Alex had a wonderful high school experience. I will never be able to thank the staff at Mariemont High School enough. Alex's support staff really went the extra mile and a half to help him be successful.
Now this is the point in the story where the funny thing began to happen. Alex graduated from high school! He walked up to accept his diploma with the rest of his class. The child, who doctors said would never walk- talk-eat-breathe on his own, graduated from high school.
Then, this July, Alex moved into his own house. I am now an official "empty-nester" and I am not sure what to do with myself. The job market doesn't seem to need fifty-something women who have taught preschool, scooped ice cream, managed a deli, produced non-profit newsletters, advocated for folks with disabilities, lectured college and med students, run a community food pantry and worked as a church secretary.
So...a funny thing happened on the way to this blog...I finished my Mommy job and lost my identity. I am embarking on a journey to find my new purpose and invite you to follow my adventures in "The Granny Diaries."
